Selection Logic

What are you removing?

  • Chlorine / taste / odor / THMs → Coconut shell GAC (micropore volume is key)
  • COD / BOD from industrial wastewater → Coal-based GAC (broad pore distribution handles mixed organics)
  • Color / NOM / algae toxins (emergency) → Wood-based PAC (mesopores adsorb large dye/NOM molecules fast)
  • Gold recovery (CIL/CIP) → Coconut shell (hardness ≥ 97% minimizes gold loss)
  • H₂S / mercury from gas → Impregnated carbon (KOH or sulfur treated)

Cost-Performance Sweet Spots

  • Drinking water: Coconut shell GAC — highest iodine, NSF certified, long bed life
  • Industrial WWTP tertiary: Coal-based GAC — 30–40% cheaper than coconut, adequate for COD
  • Emergency dosing: Wood PAC — cheapest per event, no capital equipment needed

Sizing Tip

For GAC adsorbers: EBCT (empty bed contact time) of 10–20 minutes at design flow. Carbon replacement when effluent reaches 50–70% of influent concentration.
