How to Use RO Antiscalant (General Purpose) in Water Treatment
Overview
General-purpose RO antiscalant prevents CaCO₃, CaSO₄, BaSO₄, and mild silica fouling on reverse osmosis membranes. It works by threshold inhibition and crystal modification — small doses (2–5 ppm) prevent supersaturated salts from crystallizing on membrane surfaces. Essential for any RO system operating at > 50% recovery.
Preparation & Dissolution
RO antiscalant is supplied as a ready-to-use liquid (typically 25–50% active). No dilution needed for most systems.
For large systems: Can be diluted with RO permeate or deionized water to improve metering accuracy. Diluted solution should be used within 7 days.
Equipment: Chemical metering pump (solenoid or stepper-motor driven), injection quill mounted in feedwater line before the HP pump, calibration cylinder for dose verification.

Application Procedure
- Obtain complete feedwater analysis (Ca, Mg, Ba, Sr, SiO₂, alkalinity, pH, temperature, TDS)
- Run projection software (e.g., ROSA, IMSDesign, or antiscalant supplier's software) to calculate scaling indices
- Set antiscalant dose based on software recommendation
- Install metering pump on feedwater line BEFORE the high-pressure pump
- Calibrate pump monthly by measuring mL dispensed per minute into a graduated cylinder
- Verify dose by dividing daily antiscalant consumption (L) by daily feedwater volume (m³)

Common Mistakes
- Using general-purpose for high-silica water: If concentrate SiO₂ > 120 ppm, you need a high-silica grade. General purpose won't prevent silica polymerization.
- Injecting after the HP pump: Antiscalant must be in the feedwater BEFORE pressurization. Injecting after the pump is too late.
- Not calibrating the pump: Metering pumps drift over time. Monthly calibration is mandatory.
- Overdosing: Excess antiscalant can itself cause fouling (organic fouling). More is not better — stay within recommended range.
Storage & Handling
- Shelf life: 12–24 months depending on supplier
- Temperature: Store 5–40°C. Avoid freezing.
- Container: HDPE drums or IBC. Keep sealed to prevent contamination.
- Safety: Low hazard. Mildly acidic to neutral pH. Wear gloves as standard practice.
