How to Use Ferric Chloride Solution (40%) in Water Treatment

Overview

Ferric chloride (FeCl₃) solution at 38–42% concentration is a powerful inorganic coagulant and sludge conditioner. It outperforms alum-based coagulants for phosphorus removal, heavy metal co-precipitation, and H₂S odor control. Particularly effective in wastewater treatment plants requiring TP < 0.5 mg/L discharge compliance.

Preparation & Dissolution

FeCl₃ is supplied as a dark brown liquid (SG ~1.4). Use directly — no dissolution needed.

Dilution: Can dilute to 10–15% for better metering accuracy. Use clean water only. Diluted solution may hydrolyze in 2–3 days — use promptly.

Equipment: HDPE, FRP, or rubber-lined steel tanks and piping. DO NOT use stainless steel 304/316 — FeCl₃ causes pitting corrosion even on 316L. Use Hastelloy or titanium for high-value components. Metering pump: PTFE diaphragm type.

Application Procedure

  1. Verify raw wastewater phosphorus, TSS, and pH levels
  2. Set metering pump to target dose
  3. Inject at flash mix with vigorous agitation for 30–60 seconds
  4. If pH drops below 6.0, co-dose NaOH to maintain pH 6.5–7.5 (optimal for Fe(OH)₃ formation)
  5. Add anionic PAM (0.5–2 ppm) for floc conditioning
  6. Settle in clarifier
  7. Monitor effluent TP and adjust dose to maintain compliance margin

Common Mistakes

  • Using stainless steel: FeCl₃ is extremely corrosive to all stainless steels, including 316L. A single leaking fitting can cost thousands in replacement.
  • Not accounting for pH drop: FeCl₃ is highly acidic (pH < 1). Every 100 ppm of FeCl₃ can drop pH by 1–2 units. Budget for NaOH co-dosing.
  • Spilling on concrete: FeCl₃ permanently stains concrete orange-brown. Use containment bunds and spill trays.
  • Ignoring sludge increase: FeCl₃ generates ~30% more sludge than PAC at equivalent dose. Budget for increased sludge handling cost.

Storage & Handling

  • Shelf life: 12 months
  • Temperature: Store > 5°C to prevent crystallization. Will re-dissolve on warming.
  • Container: HDPE tanks with secondary containment. Leaks stain EVERYTHING.
  • Safety: Highly corrosive (pH < 1). Causes severe burns. Full acid-resistant PPE required. Eye wash station within 10 seconds.
